Let’s bring your musical vision to life.

Any style. Any length. Any time. I record fresh, studio-quality acoustic bass stems that anchor your track and take your recording to the next level.

I’m Eric Perney, a professional bassist and remote session player with more than 20 years of experience playing across genres, from jazz and classical to funk and indie rock.

I provide premium bass tracks for artists and producers worldwide. My recording experience includes work with Tom Waits, Joanna Newsom, and dozens of others, including the soundtracks to Shrek 2 and La Tigre e la Neve.

My training was in classical and jazz bass at the University of Michigan with Stuart Sankey and Rodney Whitaker, where I also studied composition and classical bow technique. I then moved to the Bay Area, where I co-founded pioneering bands such as Transmission and Gojogo, joined innovative projects like Killing My Lobster and Kugelplex, playing to packed houses and even with the San Francisco Symphony.

Quick turnaround times, clear communication, and obsessive attention to detail are core to my process. Every track gets the same care and focus, whether it’s a major label release or a bedroom demo. Let’s talk about your project and how I can help bring it to life.

Eric is a hands-down master of his craft. His breadth of knowledge and skill run deeply through a vast ocean of styles and genres. I’ve heard him sound like the hottest jazz session cat, like a sick funkadelic groovster, like soulful bowed birdsong soaring through silvery clouds, and like a Romanian Lautari musician in the middle of the craziest of wedding parties. He always intuits the right feel for every style. He pays attention to detail on written scores. His pizzicato is like a beautiful beast, and his arco runs donuts around the best cellists and violists in all his registers. Superlative intonation, solid groove, and one of the nicest guys you can meet in the business.

You MUST hire Eric for your project!

Dan Cantrell

Emmy Award-Winning Composer & Multi-Instrumentalist

I was lucky enough to have Eric lend his beautiful rich bass sound and eclectic and sophisticated musicality to my solo album back in 2020. Upon having to work remotely together I discovered that he is a great communicator, efficient and timely at creating what I needed, and was a trooper in dealing with the more obscure and amorphous elements of my project. He struck a perfect balance of fulfilling what I had written in the scores and the creative directions I was giving for the project, while also lending his very own creativity and virtuosity to it. When I have a chance I would love to work with him again.

Mirabai Paert

Violinist,

You could not find a more respectful, patient, kind and attentive collaborator when it comes to virtually recording with Eric Perney. I had a great experience recording an album this way during Covid. 10 stars.

Clare Rojas (aka Peggy Honeywell)

Renowned Artist & Musician

I’ve been working with Eric off and on for the last 25 years. Eric is an extremely well-rounded musician who can adapt to anything you throw at him, from classical to Bulgarian folk. He commands a lush thick tone which he has great experience self-recording for remote projects. Definitely someone you can rely on to render your low notes with class.

Ryan Francesconi

Composer & Multi-Instrumentalist

Eric Perney is an excellent bass player, well-versed in all the major styles that I can attest to (classical, rock, pop, jazz, improv). He was incredibly helpful on my project and his recordings are warm and clean. He was an absolute professional and very prompt in all aspects of communication.

How It Works

My approach is pretty straightforward: I use a carefully chosen setup to deliver clean, warm, and creative bass tracks that complement your composition perfectly. Whether you’re recording on your phone or working from a professional studio, I’ve got you covered.

1.

Set up your tracks.

To get the best possible sound:

  • Export mono tracks into 96kHz/24bit WAV files
  • Keep audio resolution consistent across files
  • A click track is super helpful if you have one
  • Include 2 bars of silence at the start.

2.

Send me your music.

You’ll use an online file transfer service (like WeTransfer) to send me the tracks. Don’t worry about being too polished — I work with everything from cell phone recordings to professional studio projects.

3.

Do a test run.

For first-time collaborations, we’ll do a short test to make sure everything’s working smoothly between us. This let’s us work out in kinks in the process and gives us both peace of mind before we get to the fun part.

4.

I record your bass track(s).

I’ll record one complete pass of your piece with my acoustic bass, captured purely and cleanly — no effects, just natural warmth. Want both pizzicato and arco (bowed) versions? Just let me know.

5.

We fine-tune and get it perfect.

Not quite what you were hearing in your head? No problem! We can do 2-3 rounds of revisions to get it just right.
